What is a "buddy film"?

Here is everything you need to know about this sub-genre of the seventh art

A buddy film is a film whose story revolves around the friendship between two male characters. It is through this bond that the two come together as a team to deal with the different adversities that arise along the way. In other words, a buddy film means "buddy movie" or "friend movie". This type of plot can be adapted to different genres, be it comedy, adventure, drama, action or a combination of all of these.

Another specific characteristic of these movies is that the protagonists have very different personalities which give place to funny scenarios.

Which films can be considered buddy films? Here are two examples:

Green book: the film tells the story of the friendship between Tony Lip (Viggo Mortensen), a nightclub bouncer, and Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali), a prestigious pianist, who hires Tony to be his driver on a tour throughout the United States. It is through this trip through North America, also typical of the road movie genre, that the film delves into different themes such as the racial prejudices of the time and homophobia and overcoming both to transform the characters into friends.

Dirty Grandpa: Starring Zac Efron and Robert De Niro, the film follows Jason Kelly, who is about to marry his boss's daughter, which means a fast track to becoming a partner in the law firm. However, when puritanical Jason is tricked into taking his boorish grandfather, Dick, to Daytona for spring break, the marriage begins to be jeopardized. Between wild frat parties, bar fights, and an epic night of karaoke, Dick seeks to live his life to the fullest with Jason. So, on the wildest ride of their lives, they discover the bond they never had and that they can learn from each other.
