Lori Evans Taylor on Bed Rest

The director talks about her latest movie

Filmmaker, producer, and screenwriter Lori Evans Taylor, a fan of horror films since she was a child, became a director for the first time with the film Bed Rest. It tells the story of Julie Rivers, who after years of struggling to start a family, is finally pregnant again and moves into a new home with her husband. Upon being ordered to mandatory bed rest, Julie slowly begins to fall apart as she suffers the monotony and anxiety of her new limitations. Soon, terrifying ghostly experiences at home begin to haunt her, awakening her past demons and causing others to question her mental stability. Trapped and forced to confront her past and the supernatural, Julie struggles to protect herself and her unborn baby.

Horror has always been an important part of Lori Evans Taylor's life. Ever since she was a child, she had a voracious appetite for films of that genre, as they were a kind of escape from reality. She expressed the great power of horror films: filmmakers have the unique opportunity to thrill viewers while subtly exposing them to other important themes. That is the case with Bed Rest, which depicts the joy, fear, and challenges that come with pregnancy. It also shows common experiences and awakens emotions with different themes such as claustrophobia from isolation.

A few years ago, she and her partner suffered a tragic loss. Both rebuilt their lives but Lori continued to reflect on the nature of grief and how it presents a crossroads: finding a way to accept it or succumb to it. This is one of the major triggers for Julie Rivers' story.

Inspired by classic horror thrillers such as Rosemary's Baby (1968), The Orphanage (2007,) and The Others (2001), Bed Rest is a superb thriller that aims to scare the audience but also invites reflection on a deeper level.

The film stars Melissa Barrera, Guy Burnet, and Edie Inksetter and is now available in theaters.
