Ruben Östlund's new film follows models Carl and Yaya, who navigate the fashion world while exploring the limits of their relationship. The couple is invited on a luxury cruise with a particular group of people: superrich passengers, a Russian oligarch, British arms dealers, and an idealistic, alcoholic, Marxist captain. At first, everything seems amazing and Instagrammable. However, a storm approaches and the passengers get seasick during dinner. The cruise ends catastrophically: the protagonists end up marooned on a deserted island with a group of billionaires and one of the cruise's waitresses.
The name of the film, Triangle of Sadness, refers to a concept used in the beauty industry, specifically to wrinkles between the eyebrows, which can be solved with Botox. The director suggested this title to emphasize the current obsession with appearance and the concept that inner well-being is sometimes secondary. The filmmaker also seeks to demonstrate that beauty has an economic value, whether in the world of fashion or the "normal" world. Finally, the film invites reflection on issues of gender roles and behavioral expectations.
Triangle of Sadness features a great cast, including Charlbi Dean, Harris Dickinson, Woody Harrelson (The Hunger Games, Seven Psychopaths, and Midway), and Dolly de León. But that’s not all!
