"It was a miracle this movie happened at all"

Director Roland Emmerich says

Roland Emmerich, director of films such as Independence Day and Midway, talked about his upcoming project Moonfall. Being a film with a budget of more than $140 million, it will be one of the iconic director's biggest bets. It also features an excellent cast composed of: Halle Berry (The Call), Patrick Wilson (Midway), Donald Sutherland (The Hunger Games), Michael Pena (Million Dollar Baby), Charlie Plummer (All the Money in the World) and John Bradley (Game of Thrones).

The project was about to start shooting last year, but it was delayed due to the covid-19 global pandemic. The director explained in an interview for Deadline: "As an independent movie it wasn’t easy to overcome $5-6M at least in Covid costs. We had to find a bank to finance us. We were in pre-production in Canada at the beginning of the year but we had to immediately stop everything because of the pandemic. There was a lot of back and forth between insurance companies and banks. It was a miracle this movie happened at all. We got it done but it took a lot longer than I thought it would.”

What is it about? It’s about a space crew that travels to the moon but is hit by an asteroid which sends them on a collision course with Earth. Emmerich says the film is intended as a potential future saga: "Don't forget that Moonfall is written as the beginning of a saga. It opens the door onto an epic adventure..."

Regarding those who have doubts about starting a project in these unprecedented global conditions, he encourages them and gives them a hopeful message: "If you take it one bite at a time and are not overwhelmed by the mountain of problems, making a movie even in this context can be achieved. Not giving up and taking it one step at a time is key to make it done. Moonfall is proof of this."

And finally, a message to all his fans: "my films are made for the big screen (...) that experience will surely survive. It must survive. Going to the movies is a unique experience, you feel part of something."
