The music of Songbird

Three Little Birds by Bob Marley

The song Three Little Birds by world famous singer Bob Marley is present in the trailer of this film set in the city of Los Angeles in the year 2024. Humanity is still living a global pandemic as the COVID-19 virus has mutated and become more deadly. Those who are infected are sent to concentration camps called Q-Zones.

Within this hopeless scenario we find a love story between Nico (K.J. Apa) and Sara (Sofia Carson), who cannot see each other physically due to confinement, a phenomenon that many couples have experienced last year and for which they can relate.

Marley's song is the fourth of the album Exodus and it debuted as a single in 1980. Since then it has become one of his most popular songs and it was sung in several opportunities by multiple artists. Many think the name of the song is Don't Worry About a Thing or Every Little Thing is Gonna Be All Right because those are the phrases most repeated throughout the song, but the title refers to three little birds.

What was the source of inspiration for this song? Some say that Marley was inspired by actual birds he saw -particularly canaries- passing by his house frequently and he was fond of. On the other hand, there were three women who were singers in the reggae group I Threes and they said that it was a song written in reference to them since many times the iconic artist called them that. While we may not know for sure which of the two theories is true - or even if both are true - we can certainly enjoy the great song he has left us.

The song has a hopeful message, something that Michael Bay’s film wants to convey: "Although this is a pandemic thriller and has suspense and terror, the heart of a story is hope," he says and adds, "It’s the hope that is represented in Sara's character and the love between Sara and Nico. In our never-ending dark night, the songbird sings a song of hope.”
