The United States vs. Billie Holliday

In the race for the Oscars

There are already many rumors about the possible nominees - and winners! - of the 93rd edition of the Oscars to be held in April 2021. The United States vs. Billie Holiday is one of the films that -according to the critics- could be nominated for best picture.

The film is directed by Oscar nominee Lee Daniels (The Butler) and is inspired by the life of one of the most important jazz singers in history. Billie Holiday was both loved by her fans and sought after by federal agents because of her controversial song Strange Fruit, which became the anthem of the 20th century civil rights movement. It is also based on the book Chasing the Scream: The first and Last Days of the War on Drugs, written by British journalist Johann Hari.

Who is in the cast? Grammy nominee Andra Day who plays Billie, Trevante Rhodes (Moonlight), Garret Hedlund (Mudbound), and Natasha Lyonne.

In an interview with Vanity Fair, the director, when asked about Day's performance in this iconic character, said, "She wasn't acting. She was just baring her soul.”

The film will hit US theaters in February and, even though it does not have a confirmed release date in Latin America, we hope to hear from it soon.
