Steven Yeun in Minari

He could become the first Asian best actor nominee at the Oscar awards

Little by little we are approaching the race for the great Oscars. Although the pandemic we are currently living delayed the dates for the announcement of the official nominees and the awards ceremony - from December to February and from February to April respectively - there are already many rumors about movies, directors and actors that could have great chances.

This is the case of Steven Yeun, who plays Jacob, the family’s father in the film Minari. If elected, he would become the first Asian actor to be nominated for an Academy Award for Best Actor. We believe he has a good chance since his performance was critically acclaimed at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year.

The actor of the world famous series The Walking Dead had also received the best reviews of his career for his performance in the Korean film Burning, which earned him an award for best supporting actor at the LAFCA Awards (Los Angeles Films Critics Association).

What is Minari about?

Director Lee Isaac Chung tells the story of a Korean-American family moving to a small farm in Arkansas as they chase after their own American dream. Their home changes completely with the arrival of their cunning, foul-mouthed, and incredibly loving grandmother. In the midst of the instability and challenges of this new life, the film shows the undeniable resilience of a family and what a home actually entails.

In addition to Yeun, the film features Yeri Han as Monica, the family’s mother; Alan Kim as David, one of the children; Noel Cho as Anne, the daughter; and Yuh-jung Youn who plays the grandmother.
