Wearing corsets in Hollywood

An elegant garment, but difficult to wear

For at least half a century, fashion has been at the center of everyone's life. It not only defines social identities, but also allows us to identify periods. Hollywood costumes are carefully selected so that together with the film fully take us to each historical moment to enjoy every detail. Lately, many actresses have been talking about corsets.

Many actresses such as Elle Fanning (Teen Spirit), Keira Knightley (Colette, Official Secrets) and Rachel Brosnahan (The Courier) have spoken up about the consequences of wearing this tight garment.

Fanning stated that her body underwent certain changes after wearing corsets and that she even had to change her breathing pattern, especially when she had very long sentences in the script. "I loved them, and they are beautiful, but I had no problem giving them back," she said. Keira Knightley said that she was not surprised to learn that many women fainted when wearing them. And she added: "I am not surprised at all that women were known as the weaker sex because you literally cannot breathe (...) when doing an emotional scene, you can't calm down because you cannot draw a breath to feel relief."

On the other hand, Brosnahan, the main actress of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, said in an interview that some of her ribs are injured from wearing the corset during filming and it is for this reason that she can no longer take deep breaths anymore.

This is a topic that invites us to reflect on what possibilities exist to replicate these beautiful garments in a way that don’t entail a sacrifice for those who must wear them.
