Peter Segal: “This is the story of two broken souls”

The director of My Spy talks about the characters of Dave Bautista and Chloe Coleman

My Spy is the perfect comedy to enjoy with the whole family because children and adults will have fun with the relationship between the ultra-secret spy JJ and young Sophie.

Although director Peter Segal has vast experience in direction and his career is very well known, he still thinks he is learning the whole time. “I like directing any kind of films, and with My Spy I could make once again an action film, but on a comedy note”, he said to the press.

According to Segal, mixing action and comedy allowed him to “take elements from both genres and create a balance in the story.”

My Spy. A spy, a girl and a peculiar deal

Agent JJ’s last missions (Dave Bautista) were a disaster so he is given one last chance to prove himself, but he seems to be meant to fail since during the mission he is uncovered by Sophie (Chloe Coleman), a girl who threatens him not to give him away only if he teaches her everything he knows.

On the plot, Peter Segal said about the characters: “this is the story of two broken souls, of two lost characters. When they are together, because of the circumstances that placed them there, the begin to help each other.”

A relationship that originates from what the characters lack, which in the case of Sophie is the absence of her father whereas JJ has no contact with other people, that is why: “being together helps them overcome their vulnerabilities”, said the filmmaker.
