How did Justin Dec inspire to create Countdown?

The director reveals the initial idea that gave life to the entire project

Director Justin Dec loves the works by Steven Spielberg, George Lucas and Robert Zemeckis. He grew up in the 1980s, watching movie classics that influenced him and that prompted him to be a filmmaker.

About to release his first feature film, Countdown tells the story of Quinn (Elizabeth Lail) a young nurse who downloads an application that predicts the time of her death. There she discovers that she only has two days to live!

The idea of the plot arose almost by accident, Justin Dec recalls: “I was using the application to set an alarm or a timer on the phone. I was looking at the numbers that were counting down and this idea came to me, I thought: "What would happen if this was marking the time I have left until my death?"

That first idea led him to develop the story: “from there, it was like a snowball. We will all die at some point, but we don't know when. What would happen if that information was close at hand?”

Countdown. Between terror and comedy moments

Although the story mainly goes through suspense and terror, there are also high doses of comedy that serve to decompress situations. Dec gives more details: “I always remember a great filmmaker who said that the important thing in a movie is to build tension and release it as a valve. Naturally it brings the audience to zero. It can rebuild.”

And he adds: “otherwise, I feel that you have them in a state of suspense and do not give them any time to recover. I think finding that balance of comedy gives you that space again.”
