The current war: the battle for history

Benedict Cumberbatch and Michael Shannon in a fight to the death

Few things were as decisive in the history of mankind as scientific discoveries; everything that surrounds us today is the product of technological advances that changed forever our daily lives.

But these advances are not external to conflicts and the struggle of interests, and that is the main charm of The Current War, the new film by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon.

The plot allows us to discover the disputes between inventor Thomas Edison (played by Benedict Cumberbatch) and businessman George Westinghouse (Michael Shannon) to determine the electrical system the United States would use and therefore the rest of the world.

The two electricity companies created by Edison and Westinghouse competed for the monopoly of electricity amidst cross accusations and different conflicts.

However, they are not the only ones who work with electricity and think about their possible profits. Another inventor of the time, Nikola Tesla (Nicholas Hoult), offered a more innovative proposal: alternating current versus the direct current proposed by Edison.

The cast of The Current War is completed with Katherine Waterston (whom we recently saw in the Mid90s), Tom Holland and Matthew Macfadyen.

A period film that defined our days!
