When Tony Lip’s (Viggo Mortensen) phone rings, a proposal comes to his life: "A person called. A doctor. He is looking for a driver. Are you interested?" Fired from his job as a security agent in a nightclub in New York not long ago, he accepts the offer and meets his new employer.
Upon arriving, he is surprised to discover that Don Shirley (Mahershala Ali) is not a doctor, but a musician who is about to begin a concert tour in the southern United States. Shirley asks him: "Do you have any problem working for a black man?" to which Lip answers: "With you in the south? Sure there will be problems."
