The Greatest of Cinema: Martin Scorsese

A review of this director’s incredible trajectory

Martin Scorsese is an American director, screenwriter, and film producer born in New York in 1942. He is influenced by Italian neorealism and inspired by other filmmakers like Roberto Rossellini, Vittorio De Sica, and Federico Fellini. His movies stand out not only because they address different topics such as the importance of family, the existential crisis of individuals, and the questioning of faith, but also because they include imperfect protagonists.

Let’s go through his highest-grossing titles:

- The Departed (2006): Martin Scorsese’s greatest success was ten years ago with this title that grossed more than 173 million. It tells the story of the confrontation with the biggest organized crime gang in Boston. A strategy that consists of getting to Frank Costello, the powerful boss of the Irish mafia, and putting an end to his illegal business.

- Cape Fear (1991): it grossed more than 162 million. Starring Juliette Lewis, Robert De Niro (The War With Grandpa, Dirty Grandpa), Jessica Lange, and Nick Nolte (Parker), the film follows a convict who has just been released from prison and wants to take revenge on the lawyer Sam Bowden as he holds him responsible for his conviction.

- The Aviator (2004): having grossed almost 139 million, the film delves into the biography of Howard Hughes,

an Aviation pioneer. It received great international recognition, several nominations, and also won the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture Drama.

- Shutter Island (2010): with more than 138 million, Leonardo Di Caprio and Mark Ruffalo star in this film where two detectives go to a remote island in Boston to investigate the disappearance of the dangerous murderer.

The Wolf of Wall Street (2013): This film, which grossed more than $125 million, tells the story of Jordan Belfort, a wealthy Wall Street executive who served 20 years after refusing to cooperate in a massive fraud case in the 1990s involving corruption on Wall Street.

Other successful films by this director are The Color of Money (1986), Gangs of New York (2002), and Taxi Driver (1976), which exceeded one hundred million dollars at the box office. As we can see, Martin Scorsese is a magnificent director and a great reference in the world of the seventh art.
