Beautiful Boy: a touching story

The director Felix van Groeningen could not be indifferent to David Sheff’s story

The plans of a director can change completely when it comes to finding a fascinating story that forces him to rethink everything planned. Director Felix van Groeningen lived that while beginning his new film.

The visual manager of Beautiful Boy said: "Before embarking on the project I had thought about making a period film, but nothing had personally moved me like the story of David Sheff and his son Nic".

And no wonder, David Sheff's book (on which the film is based) was a heartbreaking account of how his family had to deal with his son's addictions. "Family dynamics, the illusion of control and the passing of time are topics that attracted me in my previous films. I had addressed substance abuse in some of my films, but the tough emotions of Sheff's story, and the way it was told, moved me."

Beautiful Boy. There's always a way out

Felix van Groeningen achieves a real and uncompromising film about a father's struggle to recover his son. And he had two great actors to move the audience: Steve Carell and Timothée Chalamet.

A heartbreaking story, but at the same time full of hope.
