From the book to the film: One True Loves

Here is everything you need to know about the book that inspired this film

One True Loves follows Emma and Jesse, who have been the perfect couple since high school. They fell in love, got married, and left their small Massachusetts town. They live life to the fullest and take every opportunity to travel the world. On their first wedding anniversary, Jesse must travel to the Aleutian Islands for work, but his helicopter crashes in the Pacific. Emma is forced to move on with her life and decides to quit her job and return home. Years later, she runs into her old friend Sam and they fall in love. However, after their engagement, Jesse is found alive. Emma now has a husband and a fiancé, but...who is her true love?

This wonderful story questions: do our past experiences make us who we are? Or do we have a choice? From this dilemma, the novel offers one of life's usual questions and takes it to an extreme romantic scenario. The book by Taylor Jenkins Reid, who also published Daisy Jones & The Six and Carrie Soto is Back, invites you to reflect on losing someone, moving on, and then having that person come back into your life. What would you do in that case?

Unlike other adaptations where the author is not involved, One True Loves was a transposition by the writer and her husband Alex. Both sought to make the story appropriate for this medium and made an important distinction: the book’s first half takes place in the past and the other half in the present. The film, however, is firmly rooted in the present and they found a way to depict what happened in the past in a compelling way, without dwelling too long there. The essential thing that unites both the novel and the film is the protagonist's dilemma: which version of herself does she want to be, her version with Jesse or her version with Sam?

Directed by Andy Fickman, the film features a talented cast, including Phillipa Soo, Luke Bracey, and Simu Liu. The three were fully dedicated to their characters, had several conversations before filming, and defined all the details that could add up when acting in front of the camera, details that are important to their relationships and allow to deepen the connection between Emma and Sam, and between Emma and Jesse.

Enjoy One True Loves in theaters in June in Mexico and Brazil.
