Traveling with Diamond: Lion (Part II)

A brief tour of different places in Australia

A few weeks ago in Traveling with Diamond, we learned about India through Lion, a film about an Indian boy who gets lost thousands of miles away from home and survives many adversities until a couple adopts him. Twenty-five years later, he will go on a difficult quest to find his family of origin. We’ll continue our journey through different places in the film and today we’ll travel to Australia.

The main cities where this film was shot were Melbourne and Tasmania, more specifically Hobart.

One of the most impressive landscapes shown in the film is Marion Bay and you can see a scene of the family playing cricket on that beach. One of the tourist highlights of this scene is The Lanterns in Tasman National Park, also known as The Totem Pole and The Candlestick.

Another interesting location is Mount Wellington where our protagonist, Saroo, and his girlfriend, take a stroll to enjoy the view of Hobart city.

Finally, a great panning shot of a narrow strip of land with a turquoise sea on either side introduces us to Bruny Island where the film's characters meet at a restaurant for lunch. The reason this shot is shown before the family gathers for lunch is that Bruny Island offers incredible dining experiences. Many food-loving tourists often go on a day tour to taste local cheese, fresh oysters, and other gourmet products.

Lion, directed by Garth Davis and starring Nicole Kidman (Secret in Their EyesDestroyer) is based on the autobiographical story of Saroo Brierley and his book A Long Way Home. A story that explores the meaning and value of family and delves into the importance of self-identity.
