Behind the scenes of films

How is film editing done?

Surely we have heard several times about the editing of a film although we do not know precisely what it is. Film editing is the process by which the shots and sequences of a film are arranged so that the viewer sees them as the director wishes. The way they are arranged is important because they can completely change the meaning, that is, the message the director wants to convey.

There are several types of editing, which are detailed below:

Narrative: it is the one that tells the facts.

Expressive: it is the one that marks the rhythm of the action. In action films there will be a fast pace, but in suspense films, for example, a slower one.

Ideological: it uses emotions. It is based on gestures, symbols, among others.

Creative: it does not take into account a chronology and gives rise to a totally new operation that will have coherence, rhythm, action and its own beauty.

Poetic: it is the one that causes reactions in the viewer for being a true poetic work.

As you can see, the work of those who perform this task is very important, since this process explains a story, creates spatial coherence, creates visual and rhythmic relations, maintains temporal continuity and hides from the viewers the resources of fiction construction.

So now you know, next time you sit down to enjoy a movie at the cinema, pay attention to each of the scenes and think about the editor who did that amazing job.
