Against going back to "normal"

Artists and scientists sign a letter that points out a harmful way of living

At Diamond we are fortunate to have a lot of committed environmental figures.

In times of pandemic, several of the protagonists of our favorite films joined a group of artists and scientists to sign a letter making a very peculiar request: not to return to normality.

An urgent call for reflection

The text was written by French actress Juliette Binoche and philosopher Aurélien Barrau, while the signers include outstanding artists such as Joaquin Phoenix (Don’t worry, he won’t get far on foot), Adam Driver (The Report and Logan Lucky), Robert De Niro (War with Grandpa) and Willem Dafoe (The Florida Project and At Eternity’s Gate), among others.

Published in Le Monde diplomatique, the letter asks that, after the pandemic, we do not return to the normality of a system that systematically damages the environment and therefore human survival.

"The coronavirus pandemic is a tragedy. The crisis is, however, inviting us to examine what is essential," the letter states.

"The ongoing ecological catastrophe is a meta-crisis: the mass extinction of life on Earth is no longer in doubt, all indicators point towards an existential direct threat. Unlike the pandemic, although severe, a global ecological collapse will have incalculable consequences," this large group of signatories noted.
