Steve Carell took his precautions when meeting David Sheff, father and journalist on which the story of Beautiful Boy is based. The actor did not want the real protagonist to feel uncomfortable.
"I did not want to talk to him as if he were a science project", says Carell. "But I wanted to have an idea of who he was and what happened. Looking from the outside, the Sheffs seem to be a family that, if it was not perfect, was really happy".
For David, watching the making of a movie based on his life was somewhat disorienting. Watching Carell interpreting him made it even stranger. "Steve Carell is a genius. I felt extremely honored that he wanted to make this movie", he says.
