Why Matthew McConaughey?
McConaughey was always the only option for the main character of the fisherman whose past knocks on the door to demand new sacrifices.
"I think Matthew is the best. Dill (the fisherman) needs to be slightly intensified, he has to be a kind of character that does not give away easily, someone who is locked in himself, and I thought it was Matthew," said director Steven Knight. To which producer Guy Heeley added: "We loved the idea of Matthew from the beginning. Matthew loved the script and, very quickly, we had him on board."
Likewise, McConaughey felt trapped by the different shades of the story. "I remember writing to Steven. Please, do not change it. Please, do not change a word," he finished.
