Brilliantly performed by Tonni Collette, the character of Annie Graham is one of the key pieces of Ari Aster's first feature film, Hereditary.
A captivating performance
In this film that portrays the birth of supernatural horror in a family home, Annie tries- as she can - to stop the domestic collapse that her mother’s death left.
The recently deceased Ellen imposed herself as a cryptic matriarchal figure for the family composed of Annie, her husband and two children.
Little by little, Annie will discover how many things were left unresolved. "She is someone who has a lot of problems with her mother, but it seems she cannot get to the bottom of them," says director Ari Aster. And therapy sessions will not be enough.
The film will reveal the feelings of alienation Annie feels within her own family. While she tries to process the anguish by dedicating herself to art, life escapes her control. Ancestral secrets come to light, and the whole family begins to live a hell.
