Remakes in Hollywood

An increasingly recurrent resource in the film industry

The concept of a remake in the seventh art consists of making a new version of a previously released film. This recreation may have several similarities in plot, characters, setting, or other details of the previous work, but one of the most usual characteristics is that the original film was made in a specific country. Later, after the success at the box office, the same story is replicated in other parts of the world.

Let’s go over some of the remakes that made it to the big screen:

CODA: a remake of the successful French movie La Famille Bélier, CODA tells the story of Ruby (Emilia Jones), the only hearing person in a peculiar deaf family, who spends her days helping her family to communicate with the rest of the world while at the same time following her dream as an amateur singer with the help of Bernardo Villalobos (Eugenio Derbez), his passionate choir teacher.

After the Wedding: a remake of the great Danish film Efter brylluppet with quite an original twist: the two main male characters are now female roles and are played by Michelle Williams (All the Money in the World) and Julianne Moore (A Single ManSuburbiconStill Alice). It tells the story of the director of an Indian orphanage who is on the verge of bankruptcy, but after learning that her organization is about to receive a large donation from an American businesswoman, she travels to New York to meet her. However, she will be forced to confront her past.

Secret in Their Eyes: the original Oscar-winning Argentine film had its U.S. remake with an outstanding cast: Nicole Kidman (LionDestroyerGenius), Julia Roberts (Ben is BackLarry Crowne), and Chiwetel Ejiofor. The film follows Ray, a former FBI agent, who is obsessed with the murder of the daughter of his friend and former partner Cobb, in a case that has been unsolved for twelve years.
