Behind the scenes of films: the Oscars

Today we talk about the beginnings of the Academy Awards

How did the Academy Awards begin? From the very beginning, there was strong interest in this ceremony. The first event escaped the media audience, but sooner or later, the Oscars received international recognition. Let's take a brief look at its history.

The first awards ceremony was held on May 16, 1929, and consisted of a banquet at the Roosevelt Hotel in Los Angeles where they recognized the cinematographic achievements from 1927 to 1928. For fifteen years, the awards ceremony was a banquet held at the Ambassador and Biltmore hotels. Nowadays the event is held in the evening and at the famous Dolby Theatre.

Although the Academy was founded in 1927 by several Hollywood figures, the Awards were created the following year by Cedric Gibbons, set designer for Metro Goldwyn Mayer. But... why are the Awards known as the Oscars? One day, the American actress Margaret Herrick said that the man of the statuette resembled her uncle, who bore the same name. The name was established from that moment on.

The winners were announced three months ahead of the ceremony, but for the next decade, the results were given to newspapers for publication on the night of the event. Nevertheless, this method was replaced after the Los Angeles Times announced the winners before the event began. So, at the beginning of the 1940s, the Academy adopted sealed envelopes.

How did these awards become so popular? Their beginnings are rooted in the transition period between silent and sound movies. While the first ceremony was about silent films, sound movies were the protagonists of the following year’s awards ceremony.

The films with the most Oscars awards are Ben Hur (1959), Titanic (1997), and The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003). Some of the latest films to receive their well-deserved recognition were Moonlight and Green Book, starring Mahershala Ali, Linda Cardellini, and Viggo Mortensen.

This year the Oscars will be held on March 27th. Keep an eye out for more news!
