Mike Mills, director of C'mon C'mon

A director who challenges the fine line between fiction and reality

Michael Mills was born on March 20, 1966 in the United States. The son of a cartoonist and an art historian, he graduated from Cooper Union in New York and, during his career, he directed several music videos and worked as a graphic designer for album covers for Beastie Boys, Beck, and Sonic Youth. His first feature film was Thumbsucker (2005) although the real breakthrough came with Beginners starring Ewan McGregor (American Pastoral) and Christopher Plummer (Elsa & FredRemember, and All the Money in the World). His next film 20th Century Women would earn him a nomination for Best Original Screenplay at the Oscar Awards.

Did you know that this film director stands out for his autobiographical films? Most of his film projects are inspired by his personal life. In Beginners,he tells the story of Oliver, who reflects on the life and death of his father, a man who was married for forty-five years to a woman, became a widower and later confessed his homosexuality. Therefore, the film is based on different moments Mike Mills lived with his father. In the case of 20th Century Women, he focused mainly on the women who raised him and turned him into the man he is today. In several interviews, Mills admits that drawing on his own experiences is risky but they function as a seed, that is, they are small triggers that grow and evolve into fiction.

His upcoming film C'mon C'mon also explores an autobiographical aspect as it delves into the relationship with his son. Michael welcomed the first member of the family at the age of forty-six, which created a rather unique bond between father and son due to the age difference. The film starring Joaquin Phoenix (Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far on Foot) deepens that bond through Johnny, a radio journalist who, must take care of his young nephew.

C'mon C'mon follows the two characters as they share special moments while travelling through different cities across the United States. It is a charming, intimate and genuine film that invites us to reflect on the connection between adults and children.

There is still no confirmed release date in Latin American theaters, but surely in the coming weeks there will be more news about it.
