The casting of characters

Actors and actresses not destined for a role

There are many cases in Hollywood where actors and actresses, who later became industry icons, unsuccessfully auditioned for roles or simply decided to turn them down. Here are some examples.

Emma Watson (The Bling Ring) was not the actress originally cast for the role of Meg in the movie Little Women. Emma Stone was originally chosen, but she turned it down because she was doing the promotional campaign for another title.

On the other hand, Jennnifer Lawrence (The Hunger Games) auditioned for the role of Serena Van der Woodsen, for what later became the successful series Gossip Girl. Years later it is strange to even imagine this actress in that role, since Blake Lively (The Age of Adeline) was outstanding in her role!

Now another example that shows us not everything is always rosy in the acting world: Julianne Moore (Still Alice, After the Weeding, Bel Canto) said in an interview on Andy Cohen's program that she was fired from the shooting of Can You Ever Forgive Me? because she had a different opinion from the director in relation to the character. Who took her place? Actress Melisa McCarthy (The Happytime Murders) who was nominated for the Oscar and the Golden Globes as best actress for that role.

Another film that made us cry a thousand times is The Notebook, starring the emblematic couple played by Rachel McAdams (Midnight in Paris) and Ryan Gosling (Only God Forgives, Al compás de la música). Do you want to know who had auditioned for that role? None other than princess of pop Britney Spears and Jessica Simpson, another pop singer with elements of country music.

Do you know who could have been Maximus Decimus Meridius in Gladiator? Mel Gibson -director of Hacksaw Ridge-, but the actor rejected the role because he thought he was too old for it. This opened the door for Russell Crowe (Unhinged). One last fun fact: Hugh Jackman and Antonio Banderas also auditioned for the role.
