Back to the 90s: Jonah Hill’s challenge

First reviews of Mid90s: the actor's debut as director

From the choice of music (which includes songs by Pixies, Nirvana and Cypress Hill), the outfits and aesthetics of the film (made in a 4:3 format, unlike the 16:9 currently used), the first incursion into direction by actor Jonah Hill is a success.

This is demonstrated by the first reviews of the film that follows the life of a tormented and small adolescent (Sunny Suljic) of 13 years with a dysfunctional family that finds a group of contention in a gang of skaters.

According to Richard Roeper from the Chicago Sun-Times: “Mid90s feels like an accurate time capsule— and a relatable journey even if you’ve never been on a skateboard in your life.”

Matthew Lickona (San Diego Reader) highlights Hill’s work but places the focus on some situations of the story to which we must pay attention: "His love for his characters is palpable," and adds: "While there is an undeniable appeal to the notion of love without judgment, there are moments here that seem to argue that judgment is precisely what love demands," he says.

Adam Graham (Detroit News) states: "Mid90s feels brief, like a sketch rather than a full painting. But Hill is finding his footing, landing one trick at a time, and he’s off to a strong start."
