Wash Westmoreland: "Colette and Willy were a famous couple"

The director of Colette reveals details of the characters

Every director feels the key moment of a film project is when rehearsals begin, because there it is seen if the choice of the casting was correct and if there is chemistry among the protagonists.

Luckily, for Wash Westmoreland, that test was passed with ease: "We started rehearsing a month before shooting and the first rehearsal was a great relief because Keira (Knightley) and Dom (West) did not know each other, but they liked the work of the other. When they met, they got along very well. I thought: "it's a good sign".

In dialogue with the press, the director talked more about the protagonists and the relationship they had at the time of becoming famous in the France of 1900: "Colette and Willy were a famous couple. When they appeared somewhere, it was "Colette and Willy are here!" It was like saying: "John and Yoko are here!" in New York in the 70s. They were two people connected as a couple. "

A bond that made them gain public notoriety from the unexpected success of Claudine, Willy's book: "The interesting thing about that was that they not only generated a lot of cultural noise with the merchandise of Claudine (Willy's successful book). They also had a secret, which we explore in the movie," he revealed.

Colette: The truth will come to light

And the secret is that Colette herself was the true writer of that success. That will be the trigger of the film to see how the protagonist achieves her deserved recognition and discovers all her potential.
