The true story on which Official Secrets is based is certainly surprising: a translator puts the Government of the United Kingdom in check by leaking information on the extortion of that country to members of the United Nations defining the war against Iraq.
Keira Knightley was attracted to the story as soon as she read the script and she gives details about the film: “Katharine Gun worked in 2003 as a translator at the GCHQ (one of the three English intelligence services). She received a memo from the NSA, which is the American version of the GCHQ, asking for help to obtain information on the members of the United Nations Security Council so that they could extort them to vote for the war in Iraq.”
Gun exposed that memo, leaked it, and the film directed by Gavin Hood focuses on the consequences.

An extremely brave act where its protagonist did not think of the consequences. Knightley says: “She acted without thinking, I think the story is also about her loss of innocence, because she saw something she thought was wrong and would cost millions of lives. She thought she could change it and that by exposing it, it would be the end. Isn't it horrible that this is not how the world works?”, the actress said.
The audience will soon get to know the consequences and the impact of revealing an important truth.
