The true story behind Adrift

The film based on an inspiring survival book

Adrift, the next film by Baltasar Kormákur, is inspired by a real-life story. The story belongs to Tami Oldham Ashcraft (played in the film by Shailene Woodley) who left her heartbreaking experience in the book Red Sky in Mourning: A True Story of Love, Loss, and Survival at Sea.

Crossing the ocean

The desire to live a great adventure stirred the hearts of Tami and her boyfriend Richard Sharp when, in 1983, they embarked on the journey of their lives. As portrayed in the book, with plans to marry soon, Tami and Richard planned to sail from Tahiti (French overseas territory) to San Diego (USA), which was equivalent to crossing much of the Pacific. Everything was happiness until what happened was unimaginable. On the way, the boat came across one of the worst hurricanes in history. What follows is the ruthless portrait of surviving and developing mental strategies so as not to succumb in the agony of knowing oneself lost.
