Spencer: a fiction inspired by the British royalty

Kristen Stewart as Lady Diana, Princess of Wales

The film directed by Pablo Larraín tells a part of the life of the world-renowned Princess Diana: the last vacation she spent at Sandringham Castle before deciding to separate from Prince Charles. The feature makes a specific cut on the historical facts and focuses on those specific days before her daily life changed forever.

Although it focuses on those days of her life, other aspects can be identified such as details about her personality, her way of thinking, and many elements of royal history and tradition. The film revolves around Diana’s myth and attempts to approach the reality of the woman she was. It also chooses the figure of Anne Boleyn, who was married to Henry VIII, as a narrative resource: two women who were used and, later, cast aside by two British royals.

Spencer also presents the Windsor family as villains. Some of the figures featured in the film are Queen Elizabeth II, Prince Phillip, and Prince Charles who are portrayed as the ones guilty of pushing Diana to her limit without thinking about the consequences of their actions. This is a fairly common vision of the royalty that not only can be found in this film, but also in other stories inspired by real events, such as the series The Crown.

The film has participated in various festivals, - such as Venice, Toronto, and London, among others. It has been critically acclaimed and continues to be relevant to this day. Have you seen it yet?
