First reviews! At Eternity's Gate

Willem Dafoe’s leading role causes sensation

The last days of the great painter Vincent van Gogh is portrayed in the new film by Julian Schnabel: At Eternity's Gate.

Critics assure this is one of the best interpretations by Willem Dafoe since The Last Temptation of Christ (1988). So with so much expectation generated, the specialized media were quick to give their verdict before its release.

For Owen Gleiberman (Variety): "At Eternity's Gate is a drama of moments, fragments, impressions, and although it shows Van Gogh as a haunted soul, locked in a battle with his mental problems, the vision of the film about the artist is honest and incisive and, at the same time, openly romantic," he said.

While Michael Nordine (IndieWire) highlights: "an inspired Willem Dafoe in the skin of Vincent van Gogh, Julian Schnabel's tribute to the iconic painter, an unconventional biopic that, at its best, is a masterpiece worthy of Van Gogh," he said.

Finally, Peter Bradshaw (The Guardian) states: "Vincent, portrayed with luminous intensity and power by Willem Dafoe, is a man literally in love with the world, with the transcendence of nature, which he considers sacred".

The critics already gave their points of view, now it is the turn of the audience!
