Prada in The United States vs. Billie Holiday’s costumes

A luxury brand in an exceptional film

Soon we will enjoy the biopic of one of the best female jazz voices in the film The United States vs Billie Holiday. The story directed by Lee Daniels tells the story of Holiday's controversial life, her struggle against a racist and segregated society, as well as her personal struggle with drug addiction.

The main character is played by Andra Day, who knew how to take care of even the smallest details when taking on the role. The Costume Director was Paolo Nieddu -known for occupying this position in the famous series Sex and The City- who, thanks to the recommendation of the American Editor of Vogue magazine, Anna Wintour, contacted the Prada team for the costume design. The goal? To make it glamorous and elegant. And they achieved it with the most iconic and splendid looks of the singer!

Some of the garments that stand out are, for example, a black silk dress with feather details and fringe trimmings she wears in one of her shows, and an ivory dress with many embroidered crystals, which is the protagonist in another scene. Vintage accessories are always present too, such as hats with feathers, pearls and furs, characteristic of the forties and fifties.

Andra Day explains this in an interview for Vanity Fair: "Her clothes were not just pretty, they were a political statement (...) it's important when we talk about her style to remember how radical it was for an African-American woman in her position at the time. Mainstream society had a problem with seeing a woman like her in the context of success. People said "how dare she wear furs, wear diamonds..."

The Italian brand and the whole team of this film. An alliance that produced excellent results.
