Rupert Wyatt: telling a story in a different way

The director of Captive State and his desire to change the science fiction genre

Alien invasions are a classic in the history of cinema. The challenge is to achieve a story that changes the focus and captives as many viewers as possible. The director Rupert Wyatt was aware of this challenge at the time of writing Captive State.

"I want to make a science fiction movie the way Ken Loach could make it", laughs the director. Loach was characterized by a style of social realism and a socialist subject linked to his political militancy.

Some of those elements are taken to tell the internal disputes between human beings beyond the invasion. The side that seeks rebellion and those who are collaborators of the cause (led by Ashton Sanders and John Goodman, respectively).

Also, the director of Rise of the Planet of the Apes (2011) gives a twist to the story, since the plot is placed 10 years after the alien invasion.

"How could I approach this issue in a more noticeable and gender-based way? And then subvert it in an interesting way", says Wyatt. "And that's when I thought maybe I could do this in the near future with an occupation that is not human. It is one of those not so investigated aspects of the stories of alien invasion", he said.
