On the Basis of Sex: portraying an era

The importance of costumes to create the perfect character

Bringing to life Ruth Bader Ginsburg, the lawyer who became justice of the United States Supreme Court, was a joint task between the actress Felicity Jones and the costume designer Isis Mussenden.

On the Basis of Sex, the new film by director Mimi Leder goes through Ginsburg’s life dedicated to the fight for equal rights. To design Ruth's personal style, Isis Mussenden says she worked closely with the hair and makeup department.

"The silhouette of the era starts with the hair and continues with the clothes," says Mussenden. "It cannot be just the clothes. It has to be the clothes, the hair, and then, above all, the makeup when you get to the close-ups."

In addition, the protagonist Felicity Jones also helped a lot with the costumes. "She's incredibly bright, and she worked very closely with me on what worked for her. My job was to help her feel the role. It is not about what Jones wants or Isis Mussenden wants. It is about what is right for Justice Ginsburg," said the costume designer.
