Wash Westmoreland: “There was great potential for a movie”

When a story has everything to reach theaters

Sidonie-Gabrielle Colette has fascinated and inspired filmmaker Wash Westmoreland for almost two decades.

“I worked with mi partner Richard Glatzer, writing scripts and directing together for many years”, and he adds: “We were co-authors, co-directors and life mates. Around 1999, Richard started reading a lot of Colette's works, both fiction and biographies, and he made me read them too."

Colette's life had what it needed to bring it to the big screen: "We realized there was great potential for a movie there, especially if we focus on her first marriage. It was a crucial moment, the beginning of the modern era: a tectonic shift was taking place in gender roles," he said.

In accordance with the times, the France of 1900 saw how: "women demanded more power in all areas of life, to which men resisted with all their strength. All that seemed to be represented through this marriage of two tremendous characters: Colette and Willy. "

Keira Knightley will show how Collete’s will and determination will allow her to be recognized as a writer, after being her husband’s shadow (Dominic West).
