How was the process that took John Callahan's life to theaters?

As often happens in theater, the realization of a project takes a long time and the process can last for years. This is the case of Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot, the film by Gus Van Sant starring Joaquin Phoenix.

The idea of ​​bringing the life of artist John Callahan to the big screen began more than 20 years ago, when the director received the proposal from actor Robin Williams, who had acquired the rights to the book.                                                                                                    

Van Sant collaborated during the 90’s and principles of the 2000 to develop the script, but the project never got to take off. "I think movie studios weren’t sure about the idea," says the director. "But all that time, we were meeting with John Callahan and learning a lot about him and his life."

After Williams' death in 2014, Van Sant decided to have another chance to adapt the book of the life of Callahan, this time getting closer to the original material. "In our previous attempts, the script had taken many liberties and was much crazier than the book. In the end I focused on one of the chapters, which is the story of John's recovery from alcoholism," he concluded.
