John Callahan: the irreverent cartoonist

The real story behind Don't Worry, He Won't Get Far On Foot

Author of films that have fascinated the audience around the world, American director Gus Van Sant is back with Don't worry, he won't get far on joot.

Played by Joaquin Phoenix, this is the biopic about irreverent cartoonist John Callahan, who used his comics as a form of redemption from a controversial past that left him in a wheelchair.

John Callahan’s story

This artist who died in 2010 was a musician and unforgettable antihero of his hometown, Portland.

Legend has it that along with a friend he stayed drinking in a bar for 24 hours before they both suffered a brutal car accident. Callahan was left quadriplegic at 21 years old. His driving friend was unharmed.

His addiction to alcohol never left him completely. But in his attempt to escape from the compassion of others, he began to draw black humor cartoons that caused more than one controversy. And he went for more.

As brilliant as controversial, Callahan became one of the most creative and irreverent cartoonists of his generation. "He was someone who always played with limits," said Van Sant in the presentation of the film.
