The nominees for the 96th Oscars were announced this week. A unique event that will bring this year's awards season to a close.
Here are the highlights:
Anatomy of a Fall stood up in several categories, including Best Film Editing and Best Original Screenplay. Sandra Hüller (The Zone of Interest) received her well-deserved recognition in the Best Actress category and director Justine Triet is part of the Best Director section. The film tells the story of Sandra, a German writer who lives with her French husband Samuel and their 11-year-old son Daniel in a remote village in the French Alps. Her calm and quiet life falls apart when Samuel is found dead in the snow outside their chalet. The police investigate Samuel's death for which Sandra could be the main suspect. Gradually the trial will become not only an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel's death, but a disturbing psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel's troubled relationship.
Another major highlight was The Zone of Interest. The film focuses on Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss and his wife Hedwig as they strive to build a dream life for their family in a garden house next to the camp. The film was nominated in several categories including Best Sound, Best Adapted Screenplay, Best International Feature, and Best Director.
Finally, May December, set twenty years after the scandalous affair between Gracie Atherton-Yoo and Joe, follows the emotional stability of the complex couple. They come under pressure when famed actress Elizabeth Berry joins the family to study them as part of her preparation for her upcoming film inspired by the dark beginnings of their relationship. The story stars Natalie Portman (Jackie), Julianne Moore (Still Alice; A Single Man), and Charles Melton and is nominated for Best Original Screenplay.
The awards ceremony will be held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on 10 March.
