The great challenge of directing Anatomy of a Fall

Justine Triet shares her experience

Anatomy of a Fall follows Sandra, a German writer living with her French husband, Samuel, and their eleven-year-old son Daniel, who have been living an isolated life in a remote village in the French Alps. Their calm and quiet life crumbles when Samuel is found dead in the snow outside their chalet. The police will start investigating Samuel's death for which Sandra could be the main suspect. Gradually the trial will become not only an investigation into the circumstances of Samuel's death, but a disturbing psychological journey into the depths of Sandra and Samuel's troubled relationship.

The film is directed by Justine Triet, who created this film to portray the deterioration of a couple's relationship. The concept was to show the physical and emotional deterioration of a body in a technical way, as a symbol of the deterioration of the love story. The focus of this story is the battle between a couple who have a child and delves into the complexities of sharing time in a relationship. It is a topic that is not often explored in films and the director sought to raise important questions about reciprocity, trust, and the dynamics of a bond.

The screenplay was co-written with Arthur Harari. Although it is not an adaptation of a true story, the film is full of legal details. Therefore, the filmmakers turned to a criminal lawyer named Vincent Courcelle-Labrousse to ensure the accuracy of the technical aspects of the story and to better understand how hearings are conducted in France. Thus, they achieved one of the most fascinating stories about a crime and subsequent trial.

Anatomy of a Fall received five Oscar nominations and is now available in theaters in Latin America.
